Blaine News in Bits & Pieces

Posted on Thursday, January 29th, 2015 at 11:11am.

There are a few things going on in and around Blaine that I thought you might be interested in this week. Let’s take a look.

It’s Not Too Early to Think about Gardening

Digging in the dirt may seem like some far-off dream at this time of year, but if you hope to rent one of the 48 plots at the Blaine Community Garden you’ll need to get your reservation in by February 20. Now, this date is set aside for returning gardeners that want the same plot they had last season.

If you’re new to the community garden, or if you’re a returning gardener and you want a different plot, the registration window opens on March 2 and goes through March 6. Registration for non-Blaine residents opens on March 9.

If you’re new to the community garden concept in Blaine, here’s a bit about how it works:

  • The city gets the plot ready for you and supplies water throughout the season
  • Plots measure 15-feet by 20-feet or 15-feet by 10-feet.
  • Plots are ready in early May
  • One plot per household

Blaine Community Garden is located adjacent to the south parking lot at Blaine City Hall. You can learn more about it and obtain a registration form by going to the Blaine Parks and Recreation website.

Snow Day is this Saturday

Just about anything you can think of to do recreationally in the snow is featured at the 15th annual Snow Day. This includes ice fishing, kick-sledding, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing.

Kids can enjoy winter crafts and the live animals that will be in attendance and refreshments will be served.

This event is a cooperative between the Anoka Country Parks & Recreation Department and the Lino Lakes and Blaine Parks & Recreations Departments and is held at Wargo Nature Center at 7701 Main Street in Hugo. No reservations required, just show up. Find out more by calling 651-429-8007.

Grab your Sweetheart

I love this event – it’s great for dads and daughters and moms and sons. The Valentine Sweetheart Party is set for one week from tomorrow, Friday, February 6, 2015. This event is open to children age 8 and under and their parent or other adult.

There will be dancing to the deejay music, crafts, play time in the gym and refreshments. Photo ops too – in front of the sweetheart backdrop so don’t forget the camera.

This event is held from 6:30 to 8:00 Centennial Elementary School and the deadline to register is tomorrow, January 30, 2015. Get more information here.
