As summer winds down a lot of us are working feverishly on all the stuff we need to do to get the kids back in school (September 8). If you have a young one just entering the system, you may want to consider Johnsville Elementary, in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, otherwise known as ISD 11.
Located in northwest Blaine, Johnsville has been closed for the summer so that new classrooms can be added to the building. The principal, Scott Johnson and his secretary as well as other staff members will be at Sandburg Educational Center in Anoka until this Friday, August 28. The main phone number there is 763-506-5766.
Johnsville Elementary serves nearly 700 students in grades K through 5 with a staff of 38 full-time teachers, giving it a student-teacher ratio of almost 18:1. While this isn’t a great ratio for an elementary school, the number of educators has increased steadily since 2011.
Test scores for Johnsville Elementary School perform above both district and state achievement rates. Of the 121 fifth-grade students that took the MCA-III reading tests last year, 76.9 percent met or exceeded the state’s standards. This beats the district rate of 73 percent and the state’s 67.7 percent rate.
Fifth grade students didn’t fare quite as well on the math portion of the exam, performing below the district’s 72.6 percent, but better than the state average of 61.8 percent.
According to SchoolDigger.com, Johnsville Elementary School ranks better than 76.6 percent, and is fifth best out of the 24 elementary schools in the district. The same organization rates this school with four out of five stars. GreatSchools.org seconds this rating with eight out of ten stars.
Curriculum and Additional Features
Students at Johnsville Elementary School can take advantage of a unique pool of talented development teachers as well as some special programs designed around student needs. There are also a number of fantastic extracurricular activities including a Run/Walk club that parents rave about.
The Johnsville Parent-Teacher Organization does an excellent job of keeping families up-to-date on school events with its Facebook page. In fact, this is where we learned that Open House is coming up on September 1, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Bring your student so he or she can get to know the new teacher and, please, volunteer with the PTO.
You’ll find Johnsville Elementary School at 991 125th Avenue NE in Blaine. You can also find information on the school’s website or call the office on 763-506-3000.
