We’re pretty proud of the schools that our kids attend here in Blaine so we highlight one every month here BlaineHomes.com. Newcomers may not realize that Blaine’s kids attend schools administered by three different districts:
- Spring Lake Park
Our city is also home to a number of charter and private schools.
This month, BlaineHomes.com is featuring Jefferson Elementary, in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, otherwise known as ISD 11.
Located in the west part of Blaine, Jefferson first opened its doors in 1963 to a student body that numbered right around 600. Today, the school serves more than 725 students in grades K through 5 with a staff of 42 full-time teachers, giving it a student-teacher ratio of almost 17:1.
Jefferson has been at the forefront in the use of technology, adopting it in the 1990s. “Principal Ken Kunshier was very supportive in acquiring computers and finding space for a computer lab,” states the school’s website. It now boasts a student computer lab that features more than 60 computers running OSX, 58 mobile laptops and a networked computer in each classroom. Digital still and video cameras round out the school’s technology offerings.
The school’s current principal is Mark Hansen, who came to Jefferson in 2014 from Mississippi Elementary School in Coon Rapids where he was principal for 10 years.
Although the number of 3rd graders at Jefferson that met or exceeded the standard on the math portion of the 2014 Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments Series II (MCA-II) exams was less than the district average, they handily outperformed the state average. In reading, these third graders bested both the state and the district’s numbers.
An impressive 82 percent of the school’s 5th grade class met or exceeded the standard on the reading portion of the MCA-II exams, compared to 73 percent of district 5th graders and 67.7 percent of Minnesota’s 5th graders.
School ratings website GreatSchools.org awards Jefferson Elementary eight out of 10 stars while SchoolDigger.com gives it four out of five stars.
Students can participate in several programs at Jefferson, including School Patrol, Techxperts, Jefferson Choir and Destination Imagination.
Members of the School Patrols are chosen by faculty and trained each spring by the Minnesota Highway Patrol and the Blaine Police Department. About 50 students are chosen and they work before and after school.
You will find Jefferson Elementary School at 11331 Jefferson Street NE in Blaine. Reach them by phone at 763-506-2900 or follow them on Facebook.
