No matter where a team stands in rankings and leagues, the Minnesota United has demonstrated the two key components for surviving in the competitive nature of sports-dedicated players and equally or more dedicated fans.
When the Team First Started
Beginning in 2004, when the team then known as the Minnesota Thunder, a group of social misfits (as they themselves admitted to being on their page) began to form their own group. They would later call themselves the Dark Clouds. They would soon prove themselves to be the most loyal to the "team that nobody wanted".
The importance of fan loyalty should never be underestimated. In fact, the passion of the fans was a contributing factor that inspired one of Minneapolis' richest men, Bill McGuire, to purchase the team three years ago when the team was then the Minnesota Stars.
2013 Season For The Team
Leading into the 2013 season, McGuire gave the team a huge makeover in determination of a fresh start. He renamed the team to Minnesota United FC, and the logo was changed to be Minnesota's state bird.
Then in 2014, things began to look up finally for the previously struggling team, when they finished first in the NASL, and one of their players earned a spot as a midfielder for the US national team. As dreams of being in the MLS became closer to reality, the team's fan base increased beyond the "thick or thin" fans of the Dark Clouds, and McGuire began to get other interest, which would later include the owners of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Timberwolves.
More Recent Team Happenings
Last week, with longtime Dark Clouds supporters present, it was publically announced on Fox News that the Minnesota United would be accepted as the twenty-third franchise in the MLS. In order to emphasize the current stability and future optimism of the team, McGuire announced that the team's name and logo would remain the same.
What a more fitting name for a team that is fortunate to have a fan base that stuck by them from the beginning, the many defeats and changes, yet still rising to the top than United?
