The Blaine City Council met on May 7th and approved plans for a new apartment complex development. This project will be completed in three phases and will provide 112 new units to the Blaine area. The new complex will be located on the corner of 126th Avenue and Central Avenue.
The city has been working with Kason, Incorporated of Forest Lake for nearly a year to get the project finalized. In March of last year, the Blaine Planning Commission actually recommended that the City Council deny the project. However, they never took action and Kason revised the plan before it was approved.
Originally, the plan was for 147 units, but the revisions dropped the number to 112 and the building materials were upgraded. The council was looking for a higher quality type of complex, which these changes helped to achieve.
The project will take up a 4.45-acre site found just to the north of Perkins. There will be 35 one-bedroom apartments with monthly rent from $1,060 to $1,200, 59 two-bedroom apartments with rent from $1,340 to $1,430 and 18 three-bedroom apartments with rent from $1,490 to $1,550.
The project was supposed to be voted on at the April 2nd meeting, but was tabled because of a potential fee for the park dedication. However, the city came to an agreement to allow the part dedication fee to be paid as building permits are pulled.
The first phase of the project is expected to start in June 2015. The entire project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2018.
This project helps to show the growth of the Blaine area and will bring more high-quality housing to the area. The apartments may provide the right type of place for those needing a home temporarily, while searching for a more permanent residence in the Blaine area. As each phase is completed, the units may be up for rent before the entire project is finished in 2018.
