Registration is now open for the annual Blaine Triathlon. Yes, I’m aware that it doesn’t happen until May 17th 2014, but if you plan to participate, you’ll save some money by registering early. I'll also be sponsoring this event, so if you love a challenge, I encourage you to take part in this wonderful Blaine event.
The Blaine Triathlon takes place at 8:00 a.m. and begins at Lakeside Commons Park.
Swim Portion -- 0.3 miles
Arguably the easiest part of this even is the swim portion, especially for strong swimmers. The swim event begins on the east side of the beach at Lakeside Commons Park and the course will be clearly marked by bouys and staffed, both in and out of the water. You’ll make two turns and leave the water on the west side of the beach.
Organizers are reminding participants that there are new wetsuit rules this year. Make sure all parts of your suit don’t exceed a thickness greater than five millimeters. If you need to rent a suit, you’ll find a list of rental companies at the triathlon’s website.
Bike Portion – 16.7 miles
This year the bike portion of the Blaine Triathlon takes place in two laps and five segments, totally 16.7 miles. You can check out a map of the route here.
Running Portion – 3.5 miles
After dismounting your bike you’ll start a 3.5 mile run over sidewalks, streets and trails. The route takes you from Lakes Parkway back to Lakeside Park. There will be two water stations; one at West Lake Park and one at South Lake Park. View the route.
What’s really great about our triathlon is that you can participate as a relay team, each person choosing a leg of the race in which to compete. So, if you love swimming but don’t want to run or bike, gather up some friends and do it together.
The registration fee is $75 for individuals and $100 for a relay team IF you register before March 1st 2014. After that, the registration fees increase to $90 and $125 respectively.
Aside from being able to participate, you’ll get a commemorative race tee shirt a swim cap and free post-race refreshments.
There is one additional fee if you are not currently a member of USA Triathlon (USAT). You can purchase a one-day membership for $12 when you register for the event.
