This Weekend in Blaine

Posted on Friday, May 9th, 2014 at 11:31am.

Looks like the weather people are calling for more rain on and off throughout the weekend. Since being cooped up in the house isn’t really a great alternative, let’s take a look at some of what there is to do around Blaine this weekend.

Fishing in Blaine

YAY! Saturday marks the Minnesota Walleye Fishing Opener. If you don’t have a license yet, you can buy one online here.  If you’re new to the area you should know that in most cases, you don’t need a license to fish in a Minnesota State Park.

Moms don’t need a license to fish tomorrow and Sunday, in honor of Mother’s Day.

You’ll have to wait another month to take muskie and a couple of weeks for bass (May 24).

Blaine Hockey Tournament

The 10th Anniversary Walleye Chop is on at Schwan’s. This year, 122 teams will play, and they’re coming from all over – North Dakota, Wisconsin, Utah, Iowa, and a couple from Canada.

For the not-so-fond of hockey family member, there’s other stuff to do:

  • Minnow races Saturday afternoon
  • Fish fry Saturday from 1pm to 5pm
  • Free public skating Saturday afternoon
  • Raffle and silent auction
  • King of the Blacktop Tailgate Competition Saturday from 11:30am to 6pm.

The championship games start at noon on Sunday on rinks 1 through 4.

Golf in Blaine

Victory Links is offering a free one-hour, all-age golf clinic on Saturday, May 10, from 1:30 to 2:30. No need to sign up, just show up and get some help with your swing.

They’ll be offering additional clinics as well, one on May 24 and then on two Monday evenings in June.

Celebrate Mother's Day in Blaine

Sunday is Mother’s Day and if you can’t talk her into going fishing because brunch is your tradition, the Tavern Grill is taking reservations for their “endless house made brunch favorites.” They’re serving 9am to 3 pm and you can make reservations on their website.

TPC Twin Cities is serving up brunch for Mom as well. It’s open to members and guests and kids under three eat free.

Get your bloody Mary on with breakfast at the Ole Piper Inn. If you haven’t been there since the remodel, check it out. Did I mention their bloody Mary?

Clive’s Roadhouse is the place to head to if you’re on a budget this Mother’s Day. They’re serving a reasonably priced brunch from 10am to 3pm.

Have a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day!
